Columbus Arts Festival Performances Hit the Right Note

Columbus, Ohio—Join the Greater Columbus Arts Council and enjoy a variety of music and poetry performances at the Columbus Arts Festival presented by Time Warner Cable, June 3, 4, and 5 in downtown’s Discovery District.
Sixteen bands will take the main stage located in the Columbus State Community College parking lot during the three-day Festival. Also back this year are poetry performances, now taking place at the Ohio Magazine Word is Art Stage, located in the grassy area in front of the Loann Crane Center. The Topiary Garden at East Town and Washington avenues will host a children’s theater performance of Alice in Wonderland.
This year’s Main Stage will feature live performances throughout the day by popular local acts including, Columbus SXSW Showcase will be performing on Friday, June 3, which includes various artists that represented the Columbus musical community at the annual festival held in Austin, TX in March. New Basics Brass Band is a local jazz band that is scheduled to perform on Saturday, June 4. Salty Caramels is a folk girl band influenced by the 40s-60s. Other music in this year’s lineup includes everything from the eclectic‘70s-rooted experimental funk and jazz of fo/mo/deep to the soulful sounds of Jared Mahone. There’s something for everyone in this year’s line up of musical artists.
The Ohio Magazine Word is Art Stage will feature 21 poets performing their original work including local and regional poets including Nancy Kangas, Paula Lambert, and Sabrina Hughes. Saturday evening the Writer’s Block Poetry forum will host an interactive Poetry Slam. Ten poets will perform for and be judged by audience members. Students from TRANSIT ARTS and the Greater Columbus Arts Council’s Art in the House program and Thurber House will also present their poetry during the weekend.
The west side of the Topiary Garden in Old Deaf School Park will be the backdrop for children’s theater performances of Alice in Wonderland. Local children from different areas of the city will perform the play throughout the day on Saturday and Sunday. The Topiary Garden is a work of art itself recreating Georges Seurat’s famous post impressionist painting, A Sunday On The Island Of La Grande Jatte in topiaries. Children’s theater hours: 11:30 a.m., 1 p.m., 2:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 4 and on Sunday, June 5.
