Columbus, Ohio – Thirty-three local poets and authors who were chosen through an audition process will read their original work at the Columbus Arts Festival produced by the Greater Columbus Arts Council, June 6, 7, and 8 at the Downtown Riverfront.
The poets will perform their work at the Ohio Magazine Word is Art Stage, which provides an intimate “coffeehouse” atmosphere dedicated to spoken word performance. Three poets, Hanif Abdurraqib (2nd runner-up), Betsy Clark (1st runner-up) and John Croake (contest winner), were chosen based on scores at a March audition and will be this year’s featured readers on Saturday evening starting at 6:30 p.m.
Back again this year is the 10th Annual Columbus Arts Festival Poetry Slam, to take place on Saturday evening, June 7 at 8 p.m. The Poetry Slam, organized by Writer’s Block poetry forum, is an interactive presentation: a roster of 10 poets will perform and be judged, all in good fun, by audience members. Also on the schedule for the weekend are poets and performers from Flip the Page, Ohio State University Poets and young docents from the Thurber House. Actors’ Theatre Summer Street Team and The Storytellers of Central Ohio are also on the schedule.
New this year on the Word is Art stage is the Authors’ Showcase, featuring seven local writers who will read on Saturday, June 7 starting at 11 a.m. and Sunday, June 8, starting at 2 p.m. Heather Shaw, who received the 2014 Award for Excellence after auditioning in March, will be reading both days.
The Columbus Arts Festival is consistently rated as one of the best in the country, featuring more than 280 fine artists and craftspeople as well as performance artists, poets and musicians from across the country.
Festival Hours: Friday, June 6 and Saturday, June 7 from 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. and Sunday, June 8 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
