Columbus, Ohio—Join the Greater Columbus Arts Council (GCAC) and enjoy a variety of music and poetry performances at the 2012 Columbus Arts Festival presented by Time Warner Cable, June 1, 2, and 3 at the Downtown Riverfront.
Twenty-three bands will take the main stage in Bicentennial Park located along the Scioto Mile in the central district of downtown surrounded by breathtaking new water features as well as the newMilestone 229 restaurant.
Back this year are poetry performances by some of Columbus’ finest local poets, now taking place at the Ohio Magazine Word is Art Stage, located at the intersection of Civic Center Drive and Town Street.
This year’s ColumbusArts.com Bicentennial Stage will feature live performances throughout the day by popular local and national acts including Nashville-based and longtime Columbus favorite, Tim Easton, who will take the stage on Friday, June 1 at 8:30 p.m. The R & B funk group KaTanya Ingram & Band will perform at 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 2. Robin Lacy & DeZydeco will perform at 4:45 p.m. on Sunday, June 3. Other music in this year’s lineup includes everything from the eclectic‘70s-rooted experimental funk and jazz of fo/mo/deep to the soulful sounds of Jared Mahone. There’s something for everyone in this year’s line up!
The BP Community Stage will bring back multi-disciplinary performances to the Festival and will feature community and professional organizations ranging from Sofia Scharr School of Belly Dancing, to the Ohio Avenue Youth Center Percussion Ensemble, to a performance by Ballet Met Columbus. Winning songwriter/musicians from the 200Columbus Celebrate Columbus in Songcontest will also perform.
The Ohio Magazine Word is Art Stage will feature 18 poets performing their original work including local and regional poets including Nancy Kangas, Paula Lambert, and the 2012 contest winner,Joanna Schroeder. Saturday evening at 8 p.m. the Writer’s Block Poetry forum will host the interactive 8th annual Poetry Slam. Ten poets will perform for and be judged by audience members. Students from TRANSIT ARTS and GCAC’s Art in the House program and Thurber House will also present their poetry during the weekend.
The southwest corner of Bicentennial Park will be the backdrop for children’s theater performances ofJohnny Appleseed. Central Ohio’s Dramatic Impact with Candace Mazur-Darman will perform the play throughout the day on Saturday and Sunday. Performance times are Saturday, June 2 at 11:30 a.m., 1 p.m., 2:30 p.m. and 4 p.m.; and Sunday June 3 at 1 p.m., 2:30 p.m. and 4 p.m.
Festival Hours: Friday, June 1 and Saturday, June 2 from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday, June 3 from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
