Columbus, Ohio – On Friday an on-site jury during the Columbus Arts Festival presented by Time Warner Cable selected 12 notable artists to receive 11 cash awards for Best in Show, Jurors’ Choice in 3D and 2D work, a Merit Award and Best Presentation. The awards were announced this morning at 9:30 a.m. at an Artist Breakfast hosted by Motorists Insurance.
Aaron Hequembourg, 2D mixed media artist, won Best in Show with a cash prize of $2,000.
Juror’s Choice winners in the 2D category receiving $1,000 cash awards: Benjamin Frey, (drawing & pastels) of Buena Vista, VA; James Nemnich, (drawing & pastels) of Indialantic, FL and Mikel Robinson (2D mixed media) of Durham, NC. Juror’s Choice winners in the 3D category receiving $1,000 cash awards: Janine DeCresenzo, (jewelry), Philadelphia, PA; Nicario Jimenez (3D mixed media) of Naples, FL; and Tiffany Ownbey, (sculpture) of Rutherfordton, NC.
Merit Awards of $500 each went to Melissa Finelli (jewelry) of Boston, MA; Doug Spalding (clay) of Royal Oak, MI and Flora Zarate (fiber) of Naples, FL. Patrick Dragon, (clay) of Marquette, MI won a $500 award for Best Presentation and Lindsay Rodgers of Columbus, OH won the best Emerging Artist award.
“This year’s award winners are outstanding examples of the overall fantastic quality of all of the art represented at the 2011 Columbus Arts Festival,” said Leah Alters, Festival director.
Jurors included Jerry Gilmore (MN), independent curator, fiber and painting artist; Rebecca Harvey (OH), ceramic artist with The Ohio State University; Sharon McJanet (OH), glass artist with The Ohio State University; Les Slesnick, retired photography artist (FL). Approximately 240 artists were selected from approximately 1,100 applicants by a panel of experts through a blind jury process. To apply, artists e-mailed digital images of their artwork and booth set-up through ZAPPlicationTM, an electronic application process. A jury of art experts reviewed the entries identified only number, and selected the work based on merit and quality.
